How to format an external USB drive from OS 6.1.1 ??

I believe that when you plug a drive, the NAS updates the configuration file and reload services. Same thing when you update user rights I think (at least via readycloud). So I believe that this is normal or at least expected since a user should never be disconnected.
My first transfer was from an USB HDD in HFS+ (I think I formatted it when I was still with snow leopard) and had no problem except those of NAS instability which have been mostly solved by updates. Never tried since then.
