I don't know what "U-shaped plastic hook" you refer to. Normally, there are four small clips that hold the base of the fan to the rest of the heat sink. You don't remove the entire heat sink unless you are replacing/upgrading the CPU. You do need to pry them back ever so slightly to remove the fan. But use care, as they can get brittle with age.

Dear Mr. Sandshark.
Thank you for your response.
I think the U-shaped plastic hook is probably the same as what Mr. Sandshark is talking about.
These are 4 plastic parts that hold the fan to the heatsink.
You are saying that I can lift the hooked part here up a little and take out the fan?As you say, I'm worried about deterioration over time, but I'll give it a try anyway.
The double post was unintended.
My apologies.- daijiDec 06, 2023Aspirant
Dear StephenB.
Thanks for the reply.
Regarding the photo, I will try to see if I can get it right.

You have to pry two of the plastic hooks on the same side out just slightly, then the fan will come off. You can pry one out and lift the fan slightly on that corner, then pry out the other. I've replaced several CPU's and a couple of fans and have never broken one of the hooks. But the older they get, the more brittle the plastic likely gets. There is at least one post in the forum from somebody who did break one,
