How to swap drive for degraded array?
I replaced the drive that was degrading a RAID 10 configuration. I swapped the drive while it was powered off, but now when powered on ReadyNAS does not even detect the drive. There is no LED light...
I did not test the drive. I removed it then inserted one of the good drives in bay 3 and the drive was detected so I know the bay or NAS should not be the problem. Then I put the known good drive back in bay 4 and the possible bad drive back in bay 3. The possible bad drive is a brand new drive in bay 3. Now it says remove inactive volumes in bays 1,2 and 4. The volumes all show up as red in the console. And I can't reach my backup share anymore. It looks like the volume was destroyed. I am going to take it to Data Doctors because I don't know how to get logs or do any of the tech stuff I have read in this forum. Do you have any other suggestions?
Did you do that swap with power on? If you did, that was a very bad thing to do.

Agreed. Though the ramifications with RAID-10 is hard to figure out w/o knowing how the mirrored drives were paired.
sschmidlap I think you have a dead-on-arrival new drive. You can test for that by powering down the NAS, and removing all the other disks (labeling them by slot).
Then power up the NAS with the new disk in slot 1. If the LCD tells you "no disks" then it's pretty clear that the new drive is bad.
Then power down again, and restore the other three disks in the right order back in their slots.
