I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac

I am finally attempting to reconfigure my NAS to User mode from Share mode, following the instructions above. On step 2, I attempted to create a user, but when I try to save the user, I get an error saying that the user already exists.
When I first got my NAS, I was tinkering around with both the User and Share security modes, before settling on Share. It appears, somehow, that the user I created back then is somehow stuck in the configuration, but is utterly invisible to the current admin user.
How can I delete this user?
I have made a backup of all the contents of the NAS. Is the state of the NAS corrupt, requiring me to wipe out the entire configuration and start over?
