How are you trying to connect to a share with the Windows box? Try putting the NAS IP address and share name in Explorer's location bar like this:
\\$nas_ip\$sharename
and see if you get the same error message. What you're trying to set up is exactly what most Mac/PC users have done, and in most cases it should "just work".
