I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac

I have CIFS enabled (I think...the configuration for this is ANYTHING but straightforward)
Before configuration, when I have the share listing displayed, the file icons for CIFS were red. When I click on the CIFS icon for each share, I can configure it. Before configuration, Default Access was set to Disabled. When I enable it for Read/write, the icon goes from red to black, but I'm not convinced it's actually set up correctly. The "Hosts allowed access" and the "Write-enabled users/groups" are greyed out, meaning I cannot configure them. The only thing that's configurable is "Read-only users/groups". Furthermore, when I configure CIFS, then return to the share listing, the AFP icon is now red, and when I click into the AFP configuration, I see that it's now disabled.
This makes me think that I actually don't know how to properly configure these protocols.
1. Why is the icon red?
2. How do you "turn on" AFP and CIFS?
3. What is the proper way to set the settings when I want the following access controls:
Anyone in group rt can read and write
Guest/others have no access
Why, when I select anything other than "Disabled" does it stop allowing me to choose the settings for Write-enabled users/groups?
