I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac

Correction. Configuring CIFS gets me further on some shares, not others.
Share 1: What I want:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: No access
Share 2:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: Read only
Again, I'm certain I have some configuration wrong when I try to configure CIFS, because I do not understand why certain boxes are greyed out, disallowing me from setting the read/write access as I would like.
However, I get two different results when trying to connect.
Share 1: I get as far as the login screen. Type in username/password. Get an error saying that access is denied.
Share 2: Can't even find the share.
Share 1: What I want:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: No access
Share 2:
Group rt has R/W
Guest/other: Read only
