I can not connect to a password protected share from my Mac

First off, these are not new shares.
I am trying to convert my NAS from Share mode to User mode.
These shares existed on the old security configuration. So, I have no idea what the "Default" is.
Are you suggesting that I just create brand new shares, then if they work, copy all the files from these old/broken shares to the new ones?
And, about the document you referred to about how to set up permissions, I've already read it. It helped some, but I'm still (obviously) having problems.
