I'm ready to buy a new printer anyway
Does anyone have a recommendation on which direction to go? Does any printer model enable all functionality when shared on the ReadyNAS USB port? Or is the only alternative a Ethernet capable printer ...

If you are buying a new printer, I would suggest buying one that is already networked (either WiFi or wired), and not using the USB printer sharing function of the NAS. That gives you more options on where to put the printer (and the NAS).
My general advice is to factor in the cost of the ink into the purchase price.
If you decide to connect to the NAS, there is a community hardware compatibility list here: viewforum.php?f=108
