Initial Setup, Drive Formatting failure?, Ultra 2
I have just purchased an Ultra 2 ReadyNAS and 2 x 2TB WD Caviar Green EARX drives separatley. I inserted one drive into bay 2, powered on the unit and followed the procedure for the factory reboot. ...

Regarding setup of a new NAS, personally I would connect an ethernet cable between the NAS and the router/switch, put the drives in, then power on (perhaps doing a factory default via the boot menu, though this should happen automatically with new disks) and monitor it using RAIDar (http://www.readynas.com/downloads). When a factory default is initiated there is a 10 minute window to choose the RAID mode. After that if you haven't chosen a RAID mode it will choose the last one you used (X-RAID2 is default). Particularly with the 2-bay models which only have lights (don't have a display on the front) monitoring the device using RAIDar helps if you're interested in knowing what the NAS is doing (installing OS etc.).
Now you can open Frontview and configure the device. Personally I'd recommend updating to the latest firmware, verifying update is successful, then doing a factory default (via System > Update > Factory Default) to get a clean setup on the latest firmware. Do note that a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).
