iSCSI Dropping during file transfer #25327048
Hello, we have a problem with iSCSI dropping when transferring large amounts of data.
HARDWARE
HP ML330 G6 Server running SBS2011 (Server 2008R2), single HP NC326i (Broadcom) NIC running driver v16.4.0.1
Netgear ReadyNAS 102 running v 6.2.4
Both connected to DLink Gigabit Switch
The Problem
I have two iSCSI volumes connected to the Server, one as a Windows Server Backup target and the other for standard files. The Server backups seems to run without any major issues but if I copy a large number of files to the other volume most of the time it will crash part way through. The error onscreen is destination is no longer available, the event logs show the following:
iScsiPrt 129 - The description for Event ID 129 from source cannot be found
iScsiPrt 39 - Initiator send a task management command to reset the target. The target name is given in the dump data
iScsiPrt 49 - Target failed to response in time to a Task Management request
iScsiPrt 9 - Target did not respond in time for a SCSI request. The CDB is given in the dump data
iScsiPrt 63 - Can not Reset the Target or LUN. Will attempt session recovery
The Netgear logs show no errors and its still available via the web interface. I updated the HP NIC to the latest driver but no change. Any ideas?

- NhellieVirtuosoDo you have disk spindown enabled by any chance?
- freedomitAspirantYes, its set to 30mins.
The crash happens well before that time though, I just tried to copy 1GB of data split across many files and it crashed out after a couple of minutes. - NhellieVirtuosoI see, do you CHAP authentication enabled. Can you try disabling it and try again?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredCan you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?
Is your LUN think/thick?
Are you using snapshots?
Do you have bitrot protection enabled?
Are you using a switch dedicated to just your iSCSI traffic? - freedomitAspirant

SERVERBACKUP LUN:
Bit Rot = Off
Compression = Off
Snapshot = Never
Sync Writes = Allowed
Provision = Thick
DATAARCHIVE LUN:
Bit Rot = On
Compression = Off
Snapshot = Never
Sync Writes = Allowed
Provision = Thin
No the switch isn't just for the iScsi traffic but its a smallish network. I cant seem to download the logs on the Server, I just get dbbroker couldn't be downloaded? - freedomitAspirantSo I have turned off CHAP and Disk Spindown, I then restarted the NAS and the iScsi Service.
I copied over 29GB of data spread across loads of small files, transfer rate was terrible to start with <1MB/s but over a period of 20 minutes slowly rose to a max of 10.04 MB/s. Several times I noticed the copy hang for 2-3 minutes on a random file (less than 5Mb) and I thought it was going to crash but then it would start again. At max speed the NIC was bouncing around and hitting around 25% max, read disk (Server) was about 30-40% active and write disk (NAS) pinned at 100%. Is this normal performance?
