Item on USB drive cannot be deleted as it is in use

Yesterday, I was copying something from my ReadyNAS 102 to the USB HDD connected to it when for some reason, it stopped copying.

I tried to delete the item and its enclosing folder but I got an error saying it can't be deleted because it is in use.

I moved it to a folder called 'Trash' to deal with later and tried copying again, this time successfully and when I tried to delete the folder called 'Trash', I get this error:

The operation can’t be completed because the item “Trash” is in use.

I have tried restarting the ReadyNAS, rebooting my Mac, connecting the USB drive directly to my Mac and tried deleting it via the web interface but nothing works.

  • I finally managed to connect the drive directly to my Mac - as I said, it was problematic.

Anyway, repaired the disk via Disk Utility as per the link; there were a few errors which I did not understand but I assume were fixed as it said that repair was complete. The containing folder size reduced to 0kb but still would not go when I tried to empty the Trash.

With the disk unmounted, the Trash was empty but when I mounted the disk via ReadyNAS (SMB), the Trash size became 16kb but with nothing in it. As soon as I unmount the disk, the Trash size returns to zero again.

Oddly, when I mount the disk via ReadyNAS (AFP), there is no change in Trash size, it stays at zero.

So, the problem has mainly gone away but the mystery of the Trash size is a slight annoyance.
