Itunes DVD artwork and NAS 314

My iTunes home videos (legally ripped DVDs) are mostly stored on my READY NAS 314 device.  I can play them just fine in iTunes on my Mac from the NAS.  However, when I go to set the DVD artwork using Get Info in iTunes and pointing to a .jpg in a sub folder of the movie folder on the NAS, the image does not get saved in the movie file.  I have no trouble setting the artwork for files NOT on the NAS 314.  I know there are other causes for this issue and have looked in Apple forums but nothing I have tried has worked.  I want to make sure the cause is not a permissions/admin thing with my NAS 314.  I have set Everyone to have read/write access for the Videos share.  Same for SMB and AFP on Network Access.  I tried turning on iTunes under Network Access but it did not seem to do anything so I turned it back off.  Anonymous has full access under Network Access which seems to be what iTunes needs but I can't find Anonymous under File Permissions and don't see how to add it.  I admit I don't know what I am doing.  Thoughts or suggestions?

The NAS has a built-in linux iTunes server.  If you'd left it on, you could have accessed the NAS-hosted itunes library from the iTunes on the Mac.  The linux itunes server is reverse-engineered open source, and doesn't support home sharing - which limits its value.  But it can be handy if you are playing the music from multiple Macs, and want to have only one iTunes library.

Anyway, it's fine to keep it off.

    Two things to try -

    (a) can you change some other element in the tag?  If you can, then iTunes can write to the ripped mp4.

    (b) Does copying the jpg to your Mac, and applying the local copy as the artwork work?

What I did before seeing your reply was to copy all the movie files off the NAS to an external HDD.  That allowed me to insert the dvd covers.  Then copy them back to the NAS.  It's a hack but got the job done.
