Lost everything after expansion & volume scan
I have backups, but restoring everything is going to be a PITA. This should never have happened. I guess I don't really know that the expansion was the catalyst, but I suspect it was.
I moved the 4 disks from an NVX (business edition) into a Pro (older businesss edition, purchased used), and everything was fine. A day later, I added two more drives, same model as the original two (2GB Hitachi). Both are new, though I've had them as spares for as long as I've had the other 4. Everything went according to plan and the system reported expansion was complete with one, then the other new drive. RAIDiator is the same version on both units (4.2.21 due to issues I had with 4.2.22) and the NVX had been factory defaulted to that version with the 4 drives.
A day later, my weekly file system scan occurred, and reported:
At this point, everything still appeared fine, but I did as it asked. Results were:
The volume is now reporting 100% full. Health of all the drives is fine. SSH'd into the unit and, sure enough, c/backup and c/media are not there though root level aliases are. The only share present is my home share (I only have the one, and it was the only other share), and it's empty where it was not before. My user share is where the bulk of my files were. C was completely empty save the home directory. So, far from repairing what appeared to be a minor problem, the volume scan killed the volume.
I rebooted with volume scan again enabled, and it only got to 41%, stayed there for a long time, then quit. I suspect the first one only got to the same point, but I wasn't watching.
Just to see what would happen, I created c/backup and c/media via SSH and re-did the volume scan again and got pretty the same result except that the directories weren't deleted.
Obviously, time to factory default it and restore backups.
Is there something that I should have done differently that would have made it all go according to plan? I don't expect to ever do this again, but maybe it would help sombody else.

The on-line filesystem consistency check detected problems with your data volume. Please reboot the system with the volume scan checkbox enabled to do a full filesystem consistency check and repair.

Interesting that it fails on a Pro since the E2160 is a 64-bit processor. - SandsharkSenseiMy, my. This saga reads like a perfect case study on how to lose a loyal customer following.
Glad to know sombody has a work-around for those who don't have a recent backup like I did. Unfortunately, way too deep into the Linux level for many who purchased a ReadyNAS for it's "plug and play" capability.
Sad to know that Netgear doesn't care enough to let the user base know that there is such a serious bug in the OS.

rest assured my data was also lost when I transferred my disks from an NVX into an Ultra.
The 2nd time I could see it coming as I immediately received fsck errors so I kept the device up to trf data around on my backup disks. Until the moment I decided it was safe to allow the reboot to proceed, wham- it trashed the data.
so that's the 3rd time I've had to restore from backups due to buggy NVX firmware & attempting to expand, or shifting disks to another unit.
As I've mentioned several times on various posts - we still have no idea of what 'bugs' have been accepted as a flaw and must be fixed. As Netgear seem to think any usability problem (such as loss of data) would fall under a future request that they will no longer supply to these units.
To EOL so many products that are fully functional is shambolic + then publically promise us 'guys' that we will be treated with fixes, maintenance firmware releases in the future is really taking us for a ride
these devices are not cheap and as stated by Sandshark, they are designed for plug & play but they are impaired features/flaws that no one is ever going to publically admit to!
