Mac OS X & CIFS

Hi all, I hope this may be of help to someone else.
I recently upgraded from a ReadyNAS NV+ (2 TB available) to a Pro (9 TB). In both cases, one big file system, with several shares in it.
One of our Mac users (OS X 10.4.11) found he could no longer write files to the share (via CIFS/SMB), he was seeing an error such as "The item 'whatever' cannot be copied because there is not enough free space", and the bottom of his Finder window said "Zero KB available". He could create a folder though, so it wasn't a permission error. Other Macs would see 7 TB or so free, and could write.
I suspect there is a limitation in the size of a CIFS share that his particular version of OS X can address.
I reviewed this forum and found nothing relevant.
I enabled AFP on the share, and he's up and running.
If anyone else has a similar experience to share, or more precise knowledge of the problem, please share :)

  • Have you enabled "Quota" function for the "OS X 10.4.11 MAC user"?

Is there a reason why you're still running such an old version of Mac OS X?
