Mac OSX 10.10 cannot connect to ReadyNAS102 via AFP

Hello,

I have a ReadyNAS 102 with firmware 6.1.9
Recently I started having problems to access the NAS from Mac OSX. I am currently using OSX 10.10 Yosemite, but already had trouble with 10.9.

The ReadyNAS shows up in the finder in 3 versions:
ReadyNAS
ReadyNAS (AFP)
ReadyNAS (SMB)

I cannot connect to "ReadyNAS" and "ReadyNAS (AFP)", only to "ReadyNAS (SMB)".
After clicking "Connect As" the connection fails with:
"There was a problem connecting to the server "ReadyNAS (AFP)". The server may not exist or it is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection and then try again."

The same problem shows up in timemachine. Trying to setup timemachine, the partition on the NAS can be selected but then the same error shows up.

I tried an OS reinstall on the NAS, but there was no change.

Thanks.

Do you have AFP enabled on the NAS?

Do you have Time Machine enabled?

    Welcome to the forum!
  • Yes, AFP is enabled.
I can actually connect to the NAS with AFP using the Finder via the menu "Window" - "Connect to Server" and the address afp://192.168.0.100, but not directly via the window.

timemachine is also enabled and the volume "timemachine" is even visible under "Select Backup Disk".
Actually trying to select and "use disk" then returns the same error.

Doesn't sound like a Yosemite issue if you already had the issue on Mavericks.

Is your Mac connected to your network via ethernet or wireless?

If via wireless does connecting your Mac to your network via ethernet change anything?
  • The Mac is connected to the network via Wireless, I actually do not have an ethernet adapter for it (Macbook Pro Retina).

I can also connect to the NAS via Bonjour on Safari.

Sounds like a router configuration or compatibility issue.

Are multicast packets allowed in your router's settings?
  • Thank you, the router (D-Link DIR 655) was indeed the key.

I did not find a multicast setting, but I updated the routers firmware and that helped! AFP connection and timemachine is working fine!

    Awesome!! Thank you!!

I had the same problem on an Australia Netgear cable modem. I had to turn OFF the multicast in the firewall settings to stop multicast being allowed through the firewall.
