Making the ReadyNAS VM work in VirtualBox 7.x

I updated from VirtualBox 6.x to 7.x when I upgraded to Windows 11, and my ReadyNAS VMs quit working.  Since I test almost everything there before doing it on real hardware, I needed to fix that.  With some Googling, I found a similar issue with another Linux distro and the following commands were the fix for that and also worked for me:

vboxmanage modifyvm ReadyNAS_OS6 --acpi off
vboxmanage modifyvm ReadyNAS_OS6 --ioapic off

My VM name is ReadyNAS_OS6, so substitute your VM name.

The VM window no longer auto-closes when you shut down the NAS, but everything else seems to be working and I can just close it manually.  I'm not sure if the commands above caused the shut-down issue or if it's something else new in VB7, but I'm not going to worry about it.

  • After some additional testing, it seems that only vboxmanage modifyvm ReadyNAS_OS6 --acpi off is required.  I re-enabled I/O APIC via the settings checkbox and it still works.  No change to shut-down behavior.
