Misleading "Disk full" alert

Hello!

My NAS constantly sends me mails with warnings indicating that my NAS is nearly full.
Reading this
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=72989
and that
http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/23353/~/what-are-basic-snapshot-concepts-i-need-to-understand-before-operating-my
article I learned that the disk space needed for snapshots is included in the reported "used disk space" value and when less than 5% is free the NAS will free some memory by discarding old snapshots.

That's VERY misleading!
How can I be sure that the NAS really has enough old data to free to continue normal operation?
How can I find out how much data net (so without the snapshots) is stored on the NAS?
Doing that manually I have to have access to all shares, open them one by one, for each folder select all files and folders, right-click (in Windows), and select "properties" to see the size of all the data.
Is that really the indended way of working?!?

A quota-setting would help but according to this post
http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=72429&p=402826
the NAS (104) doesn't have a quota-feature.

A simple list like

* MyShareA: 123 GB
* MyShareB: 234 GB
* MyShareC: 1.234 GB

would help a LOT!

Or AT LEAST show the used space value for "data+snapshots" and for "data without snapshots".
And send mail warnings only when "data without snapshots" exceeds a certain limit.
The way it's now the value warning mails don't make any sense...

    It deletes snapshots to keep the volume below 95% utilization, but also deletes them on the schedule shown in the article.

    I agree with your point though. It would be handy to see the amount of space used for snapshots on a share-by-share basis (along with the space w/o snapshots). I would also like the ability to set the 95% threshold to a lower value (which would need to be a system setting I guess).

    Adding a "delete snapshots" control when I click on the share in the admin interface would also be convenient.
  • Agree, the warning email about low disk space when all of it is used by snapshots is very annoying!
