NAS 314 | Adding new volumes | Backing up
Greetings... I apologize if this has already been covered elsewhere, but I am out-of-space and need some solutions. I have a 4-bay ReadyNAS314 running Raid5 with 3x 3TB drives and a single 4T...

I know that larger drives are now on the market... Can I simply pull one of the 3TB drives (or two) and add a 5TB or 6TB drive? Without losing data?
If you are running XRAID, then yes. You need to replace one at a time (waiting for the resync to complete after each replacement before starting the next). Replacing one 3 TB drive will only gain 1 TB of storage (the rule is to sum up all the drives, and subtract the largest). Replacing two with 6TB models will gain you 4 TB more space (1 TB from the 4TB drive which is wasted now, plus 3 TB from the replacement itself).

Then... Backing up... I need to start backing files up and taking them offsite. The cloud is not an option as my files are too large. Anyone have a suggestion for a straightforward way of backing up my NAS data to an external drive which can be stored off site?
Please advise.
I wouldn't rule cloud backup out. I use CrashPlan and have about 8 TB backed up there. Though I personally don't trust cloud services enough to make them my only backup.
You can use multiple USB drives (your data won't fit on one), and use frontview backup.
