NAS to NAS Backup Strategy - JBOD - RAID 0 ??
Hi,
I have an old ReadyNAS Pro Business edition that I have just replaced with an upgraded unit. As I had just replaced the power supply in the old NAS I decided to upgrade it to OS 6 and keep it for backups.
The upgrade to OS 6.7.4 went flawlessly. I then created new JBOD volumes for each of the drives. My plan / theory was that I would backup complete volumes from one NAS to the other, and swap out the disks on the backup unit to keep an offsite copy. In summary my main NAS is setup in RAID 1 and I use two sets of external drives as backups, keeping one set at work and rotating them every couple of weeks. I thought it would be a good solution to use the old NAS instead of the external USB drives.
Trouble is when I swapped out one of the disks, the NAS recognised there was a disk present but it wouldn't let me create a volume / format it etc. Is there any way that I can setup the NAS using JBOD / RAID 0 so that I can swap out disks to keep as backups?

One concern on that approach to backup is that the SATA connectors on the drives won't hold up. There are some older SATA documents that suggest the connector is good for ~50 insertions. I think that's a minimum, but still it is something to consider.
Overall, the NAS firmware is not designed for that use case. You could exporting a jbod volume from the settings wheel on the volume tab, and then see if the volume comes back when you
- power down the NAS
- insert the jbod volume again
- boot.
