RAID is NOT a backup solution - it allows for hard drives to fail without loss of data. It does not allow for multiple failures in most situations, total NAS failure, fire, theft, accidentally doing rm - rf, your kids playing remove and insert how drives, etc, etc.
If you think different, be sure to put your life savings in a spare drive bay :D It will be just as safe as your data!
