Need help getting permission to save to USB EXT3 drive
I've been having some troubles with my NV+ and need to back it up before doing a factory reset. Transferring files over the network is too slow (1-3MB/sec) and I thought directly connecting a USB drive would provide a faster connection.
I connected the drive directly to the NV+. In Frontview, I formatted the drive to EXT3 and downloaded/installed Ext2Fsd (found here http://www.webupd8.org/2011/08/access-ext4-ext3-or-ext2-partitions-in.html). In Windows 7 I can see and mount the drive. I can even see the contents, but any attempt to transfer files to the drive results in the message "You need permission to perform this action".
I've set the drive in CIFS to default access Read/Write, allow guest access, and automatically set permissions on new files and folders to Group: Read/Write and Everyone: Read/Write. I still can't move files into the drive.
Any suggestions?

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThere are a couple tips here on how to enable writes with ext2fsd: http://www.ehow.com/how_7687587_read-ex ... vista.html
If you have gigabit ethernet, the fastest way to backup up your data is over the network (USB is slower). If you have Windows, that would mean formatting the USB drive as NTFS.
Robocopy is a good command line tool to get a robust copy from Windows, it is included in most versions. - network23AspirantI've tried over the network, and I do have gigabit ethernet. It starts at around 6 and quickly drops to 1-2MB/sec, which means over 40 days to back up everything.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserSo the drive was formatted ext3 on the NAS? Are you attempting to do the copy with frontview backup?
- network23AspirantNo. I don't know how to do that, plus I'm guessing it would be difficult since I have a set of 500GB USB drives...not all the drives would be available at once for a full backup. It's actually a unit which I plug bare SATA drives into. It's connected to the NV+ via USB.
I'm wanting to copy folders from one share to the USB drive until it fills up, swap out another USB drive, then repeat until everything's backed up.
I was hoping to do this from Windows...drag and copy.
If there's an easy way to do the backup in Frontview -- with only 500GB being backed up at a time...I'm all for that. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserFrontview backup is pretty easy, you can specify specific shares to back up, and you can also specify a folder name when you choose the USB destination.
Monitoring progress of a running backup job is not really possible though. So it is best to start with a small share, getting a sense of the speed and also checking that there are no surprises on the destination path.
Be careful to eject your USB drive via Frontview before removing it, it will likely get corrupted if you don't. - network23AspirantOkay. Yeah, I did some more research after posting and found out about being able to do the backup by share...
I will give that a try. I have one very large share which might give me troubles, but all of the others should be fine. And if I can store multiple shares on one drive that will be great as many of the shares would fit on one drive.
Thanks! I'll report back. - network23AspirantI'm just not having any luck...
I reformatted the drive in Frontview in EXT3. I then picked a small share and attempted to back it up.
It failed. In the logs, every file I tried to copy says "cp: cannot create regular file `/USB_HDD_1/30 days.doc': Read-only file system
`./.DS_Store' -> `/USB_HDD_1/.DS_Store'"
Everything is read-only. I don't see how anything I could have done would have set it to read-only. - network23AspirantAny suggestions?
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserWhat happens if you format the drive as NTFS?
- network23AspirantHow do I do that? The only options in Frontview are FAT32 and EXT3.
Are you saying, plug the drive into my PC, format it there, and then try to connect it directly to the NV+ and attempt to transfer the files via the Frontview Backup functionality?
