Netgear ReadyNas OS6 Firmware 6.9.6 - Unable to change local admin password
Hi, I have found some other articles on how to change the local admin password on our ReadyNas, however, none of the suggestions work. We just get an error saying that it is unable to change the pa...

Go into system->services->settings and select ssh. Check the box next to "enable password authentication".
When you log in, use root for the username and the current NAS admin password.

Agreed, and I don't know why the normal method isn't working for you. Though I don't use AD, so that might be a factor.
It still might fail, even with ssh - but hopefully would at least give a more useful error message.

No, it can certainly be changed.
Another avenue would be to do an OS reinstall from the boot menu. That would
- change the NAS admin password back to password.
- reset the network to DHCP with no bonding
- disable volume quota (which can be re-enabled on the volume settings wheel).
It's not supposed to change other settings, but since I don't use AD, I have no personal experience with that part of your setup.

Hi,
Thanks, for the suggestion,
I have just enabled SSH on the Admin user, however, am getting an authentication error, to do with public keys, after entering the correct password, when connecting via Putty.
Is there an easy to follow, step by step process available for this procedure?
This really shouldn't be this difficult, there shouldn't be any need to SSH on.
When the Admin password is first setup, is it a case of "once this password is set, it can never be changed because it is a master password"?

Hi,
We eventually managed to change it using SSH using the following process:
Changed the root password - using the link from here :How do I change the password of my ReadyNAS user account on my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system? | Answer | NETGEAR Support
Then logged into the normal admin interface
Enabled SSH and on the "Admin" account on the with password authentication.
Putty SSH'd on to the IP address of the box and logged in on that as "Root" but then entered the command "passwd admin"
then were prompted to change the password of "Admin".
A gotcha, is that if you enable "shell access" on the admin account and change the password as above, then remove the "shell access" again, it reverts back to original password.
Anyway, thank you for your help and pointing me in the right direction.
They really do need to do an update to make changing the password a lot easier!!
