New NV+ - Freezes daily - Hard boot required
Hi,
I recently purchased an NV+, and added two new WD20EARX-00PASB0 drives to the unit as an x-raid mirror. I've had this unit freeze on me far to often (around seven times within its two week life). The first time it became unresponsive, I was still able to ping the unit, but was unable to access frontview. At that time, I had only occupied 30GB of my 1.8TB array. After having this unit freeze several more times, I added SSH support to see if I can access this unit by some other means. I am able to get into the NV+ most of the time by SSH when it is unresponsive, and it will accept a SHUTDOWN command, but does not shut down. I would again, have to give it a hard boot. I am aware of the LCC issues plaguing the WD green drives, though do not expect this to be the culprit as these drives are mentioned on the HCL. I also created a script to write/update a text file every 2 seconds, as to prevent parking of the heads, but still had it freeze on me a couple of hours ago. What gives?!
Immediately out of the box, I upgraded the firmware to RAIDiator 4.1.8 [1.00a043]. I am also seeing the following info in the ENCOUNTER log:

- Try to check the disk smart logs to find if there is any reallocated sector, current peding sector and ATA error counts. If the drives are clean you might probobly have a faulty chassis.
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredYou can also see these figures under Status > Health in Frontview and clicking on SMART+ button for each disk.
- jmandersonbmAspirantI am having exactly the same issue with the same device. I reinstalled the firmware. I reinstalled the OS. I have not pulled any logs.
On forced reboot, it comes up, runs well for a bit, then the FrontView becomes non accessible and the shares are not accessible. This unit had some power failures to it early on, but sits on a UPS now. The disks check out fine. Baffled. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredSame drives?
When you say disks check out fine, what do you mean? Have you powered down, removed the drives (label order) and checked the drives using vendor tools? Best to run both short and long tests (note that different manufacturers call their tests different names). - jmandersonbmAspirantNot the same drives as original poster. I have used third party drive checkers. I may try putting in other drives I removed from another unit, but not convinced that will help. Why is a Factory Restore not recommended?
- mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredFactory default wipes all data, settings, everything. If your data is backed up you could try this. If you move drives not from another Sparc ReadyNAS (e.g. NV+) they will need to be wiped.
I assume you have a NV+ (v1 - Sparc) running 4.1.8 also? - jmandersonbmAspirantYes I do believe so.
- jmandersonbmAspirantOK all, nothing to report here. Same thing every day. How do I get the system logs to someone to look at?

Open Frontview, select status on the left menu, then logs. You should see a download all logs hyperlink on the top right.jmandersonbm wrote: OK all, nothing to report here. Same thing every day.
