New ReadyNAS Duo user with slow Read/Write
Hi all,
1st time post. I'm seting-up my ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID] and I'm having some performance issues.
I've spent days going through the various performance troubleshooting posts but I'm getting no-where fast.
I can stream music from the NAS to my PC but the IO meter results are pretty woeful.
RAIDiator version - RAIDiator 4.1.8 [1.00a043]
Performance tab settings - I've disabled journaling, disabled full data journaling, enabled fast CIFS writes, jumbo frames are not enabled
No installed Add-ons selected
Network switch model (and firmware version) - Netgear DG834GT V1.03.87 (It's the Sky version so I've not updated the firmware because I don't want to brick it!). Maybe I will have to though.
NIC on your PC - Intel(R) Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN. I downloaded the latest F/W (14.2.0.10) but the driver still shows 13.4.0.139 and Windows thinks the device driver is up to date.
Number of disks and disk models - 2 off Seagate ST32000542AS [1862 GB] - The health status says OK and it has no ATA Error Count
DHCP / 100Mb Full Duplex / MTU 1492
The read/write MB/sec numbers from IOMeter using Han Solo's 256K Read/Write set-up
Direct Connect
Write MBps 36.644468
Read MBps 4.115175
Over Wi-Fi
Write MBps 3.951696
Read MBps 4.153693
Just done another test and my read/writes were down to ~2MBps!
I've tested a brand new cable which didn't make any difference.
I am getting network errors which I suspect isn't good!
Network Errors [Ethernet 1]
Auto-negotiation 0
Bad packets 0
Disconnect 0
False carrier 6
Idle errors 0
Link failures 0
Receive errors 10
Symbol errors 6
VLAN tags 0
TCP Retransmits 839
Unrecovered TCP Retransmits 32
Don't know what to look at next!
Thanks in advance for any help, Stuart

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserAre your units megabits per second or megabytes per second?
On the direct connect, the write speed seems too high for megabytes per second, and the read speed is pretty slow for megabits. - rajboabAspirantAssumed it was Mega Bytes per second.
I copy and pasted straight from IOMeter results file which states "MBps"
Stuart - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserOk. Your WiFi results are pretty respectable actually. Are you running 802.11g or n? What link speed?
What isn't so good is the direct connect read speed. Is your antivirus software on? Real-time scanning might be hurting the read performance.
BTW, how do your iometer settings compare with http://www.readynas.com/?p=310#Expect - rajboabAspirantI'm running 802.11g presumably 100.
I'm assuming the 'expected' IOmeter results are direct connect. My wi-fi results of ~4MB/s is much less that the ~30MB/s quoted.
I'm losing track of what I've disabled. I can't remember if I'd disabled the Virus scanner, Twonky server etc before I did the direct connect. May try again tomorrow but I'd rather not have to disable it in general use.
I set the IOMeter file up as per Han Solo's instructions using 256K sequential read write files and using a 2048000 sector maximum disk size.
Thanks for the help.
Stuart - sphardy1Apprentice3-4MBps is the max you will ever see over Wireless-G
30MBps is when you have a Gigabit ethernet setup, which you don't as your router supports only 100Mbps
Note: MBps = Mega Byte per second, Mbps = Mega bit per second - rajboabAspirantOk. Thanks.
So my speed is ok.
Not sure if the errors are bad or not?
Stuart - dbott67GuideWirelessly, your speed is good. Wired, it's weird. The fact that you're connected at 100 Mbps, you should see (wired) read/writes in the 10 MB/s range. Of course, you're getting 36 MB/s write (impossible on 100 Mbps network***) and 4 MB/s reads (too slow). I've written up a document that provides rough performance expectations: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=363
*** Another possible reason for this is that your computer's NIC is actually a gigabit connection, and when you direct-connect, you're getting max. performance, as both NIC and NAS are gigabit. When connected to the router, the performance drops to 100 mbps. Can you provide details of your wired NIC?
The network errors may be attributed to the MTU being set to 1492. You can try setting it back to 1500 to see if it clears up the errors.
You didn't mention what OS you're using, however, I'll assume Windows 7. There are some known-issues with wireless performance in Windows Vista/7 and the ReadyNAS sparc-based units (NV+, Duo). I've written up a how-to on how to fix it: http://home.bott.ca/webserver/?p=226
Also, are you going to primarily be using wireless to connect, or will you be using both wired and wireless connections?
FWIW, I've always found IOMeter to be flaky. The best test is to drag & drop a big file (like a movie .avi file of 1 GB) and time how long it takes to copy to and from the NAS. There's a free program called TeraCopy that will give you a pretty good idea of real-world performance:
http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php
- rajboabAspirantThanks.
Will try another direct connection tomorrow and see if the results are more standard.
Will try IOmeter and the new software as well as a drag and drop and see what happens.
I'll mostly be using wireless so I was most concerned with the perf of that.
Many thanks for spending the time to answer my questions.
Cheers, Stuart - NasinatorAspirantYou also may be seeing what others have been seeing over in another performance thread. I've done some fairly thorough testing and others have also confirmed that 4.1.8 FW release may have some issues that haven't been nailed down yet. If its an option for you, you might want to try to downgrade to 4.1.7 and see if your read performance increases while direct connected. I have a sneaky suspicion that it will improve dramatically.
