I have an inexpensive USB/SATA/IDE conversion gadget (with power supply) - I don't recall the exact model, but it looks something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812232002
My laptop also has an esata connection, so I bought a sata->esata cable separately - something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... 6812196321
Generally I use the power supply from the conversion gadget with the eSata cable, though sometimes the USB 2.0 conversion is useful. My laptop eSata wasn't fast enough to keep up with my SSD drive, so I had to clone that using USB.
