Newbie to ReadyNAS

Hi all,

I am new to ReadyNas 314E, firmware 6.5.1 (we can't update to the latest firmware as the cloud service app is not compatible with 6.5.2) and i have some questions regarding maintenance require and performance issue on a RAID 5 configuration on unit.

We are running one 314E with no RAID setup and the second with RAID 5 configuration.

How do I stop the pop up to update the firmware when I load the webportal for the readynas?  I don't want to accidentally click yes and it will start to run the firmware upgrade during production time.

RAID 0 NAS - new and not issue but would like to know what needs to be done on a regular basis?  do i need to reboot it weekly, how do i run maintenance.  Under System, volume, settings I see a menu with Defrag, Scrub, Balance, Export, Destroy, Volume Schedule, Settings.  Can you tell me what does Scrub and Balance do and when should I run it?  Can I run Defrag, Scrub and Balance while the system is on?

RAID 5 NAS - experience performance issue and Iike to know how do I troubleshoot it and how to run File System Check.  additionally can I run the file system check while the unit is power on?

Appreciate your help in advance!

    Hello uptown30,

    Welcome to the community!

Other than maybe disconnecting the NAS, I do not see disabling the FW update pop up window option from the admin page. Are you referring to ReadyCloud service or another one? Although we do not recommend disabling it, perhaps you can post this request at the idea exchange board.

Please see ReadyNAS scheduled maintenance tasks available  article.

RAID 5 write speed is limited by the parity updates. For each written block, its corresponding parity block has to be read, updated, and then written back. I guess you can try doing one of the maintenance tasks first.

The update pop I am refering to is when you open up the webportal and if you're not up to date with the firmware then you will see it.  The problem is with the Cloud service the company is subscribe to does not recommend that I update yet becuase it is not compatible with their Sync app and so each time i log in, the message will come up and if i really click on YES by accident, gosh know what happen.  I think the NetGear OS should be re-written to disable it but put "red hyperlink" so that admin is aware that there is an update rather than a pop up box.

Thank you for the link - i will take time to read it and get an understand of the feature.

    Which cloud app is that?

RAID-0 is not recommended. If a disk fails all data on the RAID-0 volume is lost. Better to have a single volume per disk if you must use RAID-0. That way only the data on the volume that uses the disk would be lost if a disk fails.

Scrub is pointless with RAID-0. Defrag should be scheduled as should balance.  You don't want to use the export option, and the destroy option would destroy all your data (you do have to confirm that you want to do this).

As for your NAS using RAID-5

Before considering the possibility of a filesystem issue there'd be several other things to check first.

Which services are you running under System > Settings > Services?

    Which apps are you running?

Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)?

      Guide

      Cloud service is Egnyte.

I wish i would have done it right the first time so that i don't have to go back to change the RAID configuration.  The NAS is in production now and data is about 1 Terabyte in size.  Maybe I will wait until Christmas time when everyone is off and I will reconfigure it to Raid 1.  There are 4 terabyte drives so assuming, i can make it as Raid 1, right?

As for Raid 5 - services running are http, https, ssh, Upnp, ReadyDLNA, smb (will need this protocol on for sure)

No apps are listed under the Apps tab - so assuming none

mdgm- is it possible to send you the log directly rather than posting it up on this public discussion forum?
