No permission to access USB drive and abnormal reboot

Got two problems when using ReadyNAS 102.

1. We use USB HDD for scheduled backup of some NAS folders to it. It worked fine for a while, until we once unplugged the HDD from NAS USB port and used it on a Windows PC. Then we plugged it back to NAS - but backup job works no longer, errors are "read only destination", or "cannot create folder", or "no permission" - smth like that, depends on what we've done.

As far as I get, the USB HDD is accessed during backup through the SMB service. The permissions for HDD in the SMB are now set exactly the same as for the disks in the NAS. But the NAS disks are accessible for R&W through SMB from any Windows machine, and the USB HDD is not. I cannot browse it, cannot create any folder on it even through the ReadyNAS web interface, and the backup to it is also unavailable. We tried to reformat the HDD, to update the firmware of the NAS (from 6.2.4 to 6.4.2) - still the same.

What can the problem be?

2. When we try to normally shut down or reboot the NAS (through the web interface or by pressing the power button) - it hangs up with the power led blinking for very-very long, maybe forever. So every time we have to shut it down by unplugging the power cable. After that it boots OK. But it seems to be too risky for the drives and the device, especially when firmware is being upgraded.

Thank in advance,

Ilya

On (1) this problem usually means the "dirty" bit got set on the USB drive.  Try ejecting the USB drive from the NAS and connecting it to windows system.  The windows system should prompt you, asking you to scan/fix the drive.  Do that, and make sure you eject the drive from the windows system, and not just remove it.

On (2) I agree that pulling the plug is risky.  Do you have any apps installed?

  • Stephen,
    Thanks for the reply.
    (1) I tried doing that, but no scanning/fixing promt appeared. I even formatted it under windows. That doesn't change anything.
    (2) Yes, we installed a printserver app. But AFAIR, same reboot problem had appeared berofe it was installed.

      Hi llyal82,

      Welcome to the community!

When an external USB hard drive is connected to your ReadyNAS, it creates a temporary share and has its own permission. Whenever it's unplugged or ejected, the permission resets to R/W default access with no guest /or anonymous access. So if you want to access it or run a backup job through it, ensure the anonymous access is ticked. If it still won't work, connect it to your PC and run the Windows Disk-Error checking tool.

With regard to your shutdown issue, does the power schedule /or timer feature enabled?

      Kind regards,

        Hi Brian,

        Thanks for the reply.

Anonymous access was allowed and no errors on the disk were found under Windows. Tried one more time to erase the disk under Windows and plug it back to the NAS - and now it works fine! No idea what was that, but thanks anyway!

As for the shutdown issue, all the power schedule and timer feature options are off.

        Regards,

        Ilya
