[NOOB] MKV & Samsung TV
Just when you think you are good with everything that has to do with Hardware/Software stuff you always run into something that is way over your head.
This is one of these cases. I just bought myself two new Samsung TVs, a NETGEAR WNR3700 and a Samsung S2 portable external hard disk which I connect to the NETGEAR router. I now found out that it doesn’t play MKV if you stream, I see that this is a common problem after googling for hours but I also found pages where people find a fix and show the code they amended. But a noob like me has no idea how and where to amend this code.
Obviously I would also like to make it possible to stream MKVs but I’ve 0 experience with minidlna/coding/linux, I really did my best to find the answer myself, however after googling for hours I still have no clue where to start. If found these files on my portable hard drive: A folder called “.ReadyDLNA”, this folder contains two files “files.db” and “minidlna.log”. But I’ve no idea where to look and what to do. Could someone please help me in the right direction?
Thanks a lot in advance!

- Keith_BeefAspirantIf I've understood correctly, you posted your question in this forum (which is a place for discussing ReadyNAS devices) because the NETGEAR WNR3700 router runs ReadyDLNA to stream content from the S2 hard disc that you connect hrough USB to the router.
I have had problems streaming MKV files from my ReadyNAS NV+ to my Samsung series 5 TV, but the same files on a USB device plugged directly into the TV play back perfectly well.
I just (like, twenty minutes ago) found that there is a ReadyDLNA update available. Read this post too, to find out about the undocumented bug that might affect you (then again, it might not).
The new version is 1.0.21; if your current version is older, then installing the new version might fix your problem.
K. - SirEbrumAspirantWell, all I can say is that I have the EXACT same problem. I have:
- ReadyNAS Duo
- WNDR3700
- Samsung 7-Series
- Samsung Blu-Ray player (sorry, don't know model number, but last years >$200 model)
All have the latest FW updates and add-on updates.
After using Handbrake on some vid's, I've come to find out that any MKV file displays "unsupported file format" when it comes from my 1TB drive that's connected to my WNDR3700 and played by my Blu-Ray player. But when I copy the same files to my ReadyNAS Duo, they play beautifully. I cannot hook directly up to my TV either as the 1TB drive is formatted in NTFS, which is a file format that the TV doesn't support. M4V encoded files play without a problem from the router or the ReadyNAS and MKV's are dead, but only from the router.
I'm making an assumption that the DLNA function of the WNDR3700 isn't as up-to-speed as the ReadyNAS Duo.
Wild suggestion: Buy a ReadyNAS Ultra 2/2+/etc, because like you, I really don't want to hack my router just yet, and I'm not going to hold my breath that Netgear will release a fix for this bug.
