NSR NAS - Adding HDD of another Capacity
Hi, I have a Negear ReadyNAS RN10400 - 4bay and wanted to know if it is possible to add HDD's of different capacity. I have 2x 5TB Western Digital (Red) - Intellipower SATA 6 Gb/s 64 MB Ca...

Hi Stephen,
Can I still add 2x 6TB in to the remaining bays using JBOD and create seperate volumes for each ?
Yes. Hot-insert the disks, and create the volumes on the volumes tab.
You'll then need to create shares on those volumes.
Frontview backup jobs are handy for for copying shares to the new volumes. You'll need to create a temporary share, then create a backup job. After it completes, check the new share. Then delete the original, and rename the temporary share as desired.
Ideally you'll approximately balance the free space on each volume (making sure that no volume gets too full).

Yes. You should be in flexraid already (since you are running jbod).
So you could add additional disks as jbod (one per volume).

Are you wanting to upgrade your current disks or add new ones?
With JBOD you can't expand the volume size. You'd need to
- destroy a volume
- remove its disk(s)
- insert new disk(s)
- create a new volume
This if course destroys any data on the volume.

Hi Stephen,
Thank you for your reply. I am looking to add another two disks , seperate volumes.I was asking the question because someone once told me that if you have a Negear NAS you have add addional disks with the same capacity. I will purchase a new HDD 6TB and add a new volume, I will also make sure that the HDD is the same speed as the other drives.
Thank you fotr your help.

That isn't necessary, so don't worry about that. You can even use different speed drives in the same array (though of course the slower drives might limit performance).

Hi Stephen,
Thank you your help. To summarise...
1. I can add different capacity HDD's into my NAS (I don't need to have all my HDDs in the same capacity e.g. 4x bays (4 x 5TB HDD)
2. The HDDs can be different speeds
3. To add new HDDs, I will need to create new volumes for each
Sorry it's just I'm new to Netgear NAS' so don't want to make a mistake=.
Thank you
Jamie

Yes to both of these.

Well, you can create new volumes for each.
If you were using XRAID (or RAID-1), then you could have added drives your existing array, as long as they were 5 TB or larger. But since you are using JBOD now, you can only get there by backing up your data and creating a new volume. Plus your initial post included 3 TB, which would be too small to add to a 2x5TB array.
So for you the direct/easy path is to create new volumes for each disk.
