RN104 - Added disks, no new capacity
I set up my RN104 with 2 2TB disks using x-Raid. My RN is on version 6.6. It has worked fine but is down to 319 Gb free. I added a 3rd 2TB disk, but did not see an increase in capacity. Assuming that perhaps the RN104 might require drives to be added in pairs, I added 4th drive several months later.
Unfortunately, I still only see my original 2 disk capacity. I had thought the RN would automatically harvest the new resource, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I've rebooted several times, and eventually (after 'resync'), all devices are marked green and online.
What do I need to do to use the new capacity?
Thanks for your help.
- Well you first need to backup your data. Trying to fix this by adding those disks into your array is likely to cause data loss with disk 2 in this state.
- You should backup your data, remove the bad disk, do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore your data from backup.
The failing disk disk 2 is the disk that has your data on it. The other disks marked spare wouldn't contain your data.
The ST2000DM001 disk model has very high failure rates. I would suggest replacing this disk with a different disk model.

Which firmware are you running?
Can you send in your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)? - StephenBGuru - Experienced User

It is designed to do just that. Were the disks you installed blank or formatted (blank is easier)?
In any event, email the log zip file to mdgm's attention, following the directions in his signature link.

mdstat.log shows that three of your four disks are marked as spare and the one that isn't appears to be failing.

Thanks for coming back, Two questions ...
1 - How do I get ReadyNAS to increase my volume size to incorporate the additional capacity? Do I want these to be 'spares', or actively used in the RAID? My understanding of X-raid was that the first two disks would provide raid redundancy, and susequent would add to capacity....
2 - Once I have the RAID sorted out, how do I swap out the failing drive? Do I need to backup to external media, or will the RN re sync to a replacement automatically?
Trust that I googled for obvious answers ... but they weren't to hand ...
