(null) folders shown in networked media players

Hey,
Just thought I'd add that I am also getting this on my Duo, when looking from my PS3. I've done everything the previous poster described.

Any bright ideas anyone?

I believe that this problem is due to incorrect permissions. One thing that I found is when you "Set ownership and permission for files and folders..." in the Advanced Options tab of the shares from FV, it tends to remove child subdirectory permissions. This leads to the access denied problems. Additionally, trying to reset permissions through Explorer, while including child objects, typically does not have the expected behavior, as not all child objects will be set with the specified permissions.

The most reliable way to set the permissions of the folder and all subfolders is to use 'cacls' from the command line.

• Map the ReadyNAS folder of interest.


• Open a command window.


• Run: "cacls <drive>: /T /G Everyone:F"

You can change Everyone to another user, but as the user list that the ReadyNAS uses is different from your PC's users, it's the choice with the least headaches. I hope that helps.

Hmm, strange. I fixed it by removing the "folder.jpg" thumbnail, then rescanning!
Well, at least if anyone else comes across this they have two things to try :-)

I am also having this problem on a ReadyNas Pro 4.2.8.
I am wondering if there is an alternative solution to the one described above as I am not familiar with the command line stuff.
For me, it usually takes my entire BitTorrent folder and renames it "null". Most of the contents within the folder are correct however they are sometimes missing files, and I can't usually access the files that are showing up.

I also noticed yesterday the following behaviour. I had a folder named "Point Break" and changed the name of a file within that folder. After I changed the file name, I then had 2 folders, one titled "null" and one titled "Point Break". I could not access the file within the original "Point Break" folder however I could access it in the "null" folder?

Any help would be appreciated as I am getting tired of having to manually rescan in order to get the contents in my BitTorrent folder correct??

I have the same exact problem on my ReadyNAS NVX Business Edition with null folders when viewing the share from a ps3.
I tried all the suggestions but nothing solves the problem.
As a side note, I am also unable to delete files from the ps3
My computer is a mac and i've tried copying a folder with two mp4's inside from both afs and cifs,but the result is always the same, one folder (null) with one of the files, the other inside the correct folder.

I am still having this problem, does anyone have any ideas?
It is still the Bit Torrent folder, should I be opening a new topic?

Bumping this one as I have been experiencing the same issue. But now it appears to be getting worse. Now content from various folders is appearing in different directories when viewed on the PS3 via DLNA.

Also, the "null" folders seemed to only appear randomly--now folders I actually use and contain data are being renamed to "null".

Is there a fix for this? My ReadyNAS is getting worse and things just aren't being added anymore...

same here, (null) folders, some new items cant be found...

I have found that these gradually occur when "auto-update" is turned on. Turning off auto-update and rescanning gets rid of the "(null)" folders and they do not occur again. You may need to reset your client device to remove any caching that has occured.

(I confirmed that they were missing on the ReadyNAS by looking at the folder list returned from both my WD TV Live and VLC running on OSX 10.6.6. I find it unlikely that both of the clients would return the same bad list.
