OK. So, I was able to pull the logs (found here: http://www.linenberg.com/System_log_latest.zip, and configure it a bit. Then I tried the update that I downloaded from http://www.readynas.com/?p=2620 and it rebooted as 4.01c1-p6 and was pretty much unresponsive in the web GUI. I tried to copy files to the unit, and it locked up again. Upon reboot I got "corrupt root again".
I then did a factory reset, once again, and set it up as X-RAID with all four drives in the device. Netgear now has gotten back to me with a remote tech support mode request. I have configured the unit for this, and am waiting on them.
