NV+ Keeps changing its MAC address

OK, I know this sound crazy, but my NV+ keeps switching between two MAC addresses.

The one on the box is 00:0D:A2:6B:D0:9D, but lately I have been getting C0:3F:0E:DE:11:23. What's up with this? As far as I know this NAS should only have a single MAC address. This switch can happen just be shutting down the NAS then restarting it again.

I noticed this recently as my NAS has other issues which I am trying to fix.

Thanks for any help on this.

  • I actually have bigger fish to fry right now. The NAS has one dead drive and one with a lot of ATA error. I'm waiting for a new drive to come in so I can backup the data. I want to leave the NAS off till I can do that. We had a few very hot days here and the two inside drive over heated.

As soon as I get the drive back up I'll pull the log files and send them to the email address on the page you posted above.

    Thanks

Two disks with problems raises more issues. When you replace a disk the resulting resync puts heavy stress on all disks. So it might be advisable to clone the failing disk with a growing ATA error count using dd_rescue, then put the cloned disk in instead of the failing disk and remove the dead disk, then power on the system and see if it will boot.

What brand and model is the failing disk with a growing ATA error count?

Do you remember what firmware version you were running?
  • I originally had Seagate Barracuda 7200 RPM drives, but they started going bad very quickly, I replaced two with Hitachi 7200 RPM drives. The dead one is one of the two Seagate drives and the one with ATA errors is an Hitachi drive. All the drives are 1 TB. The version is 4.1.13, I think it was released last October. The Seagate drive were/are awful. I've had much better luck with the Hitachi drives except for the over heating issue.

The idea of using dd_rescue is good. I also ordered a USB case for a drive, so I can use that to make the dd copy from my Linux machine.

    Thanks again
  • mdgm,

I'm in the process of backing up all my data before I put in two new drives and completely reconfigure the NAS. I sent off the log files about the changing MAC address issues.

    Thanks again

Not sure why the MAC address is changing, but hopefully when you completely reconfigure the NAS this issue will be resolved.
