Ok - thank you to all that replied. I was able to resolve my issue by updating to the latest FW 4.1.7.
The issue is that the NAS did not and would not automatically update to that version of the FW. I had to manually download it and then update the unit. Not sure why that was - since it was set to automatically apply updates and has done so in the past.
I am now in the process of replacing each disk with a 2TB unit - and will get thru all of them in a day or so..
