I do not want port 23 to be open like this for a long time, specially if the password is the same password as other netgear products use.
If your router supports it you could have forwarded a different port to port 23 on the NAS.

NetGear does have a support tunnel that they can use. Provided that stays up they shouldn't need port forwarding setup. Though if for whatever reason that is not up if you haven't port forwarded to the NAS and give them your I.P. there would be delays.
