OS6.4.x broke unit, USB recover broke frontview/dashboard. VPD issue?
Hi,
I have a Pro6 running 6x1TB drives.
I had been running OS6.1 for many months without a problem.
Sometime ago after logging into the dashboard I got a message that an update to 6.4x was available.
I performed the upgrade and did not think twice about it ;S
It worked for some time without a problem, but one day after having power issues at home I noticed that I could not reach the NAS anymore.
The unit would not boot properly and I could not even use the boot menu.
After some reading online I decied to try and reinstall the OS with a recovery USB stick.
Before I started my troubleshooting all 6x1TB drives were removed and an empty 1TB drive was inserted.
After about 20 tries and 8 diffrent USB sticks I was able to get RAIDiator 4.x installed on the unit.
It booted fine but when I logged into frontview it was comtpletly empty, I got an error message that I can not remember.
I decided to try and recover the unit again but this time with OS6.1
This worked also and the unit is now running OS6 but when I access the dashboard again I get an error message.
I tried using the boot menu to do a factory reset and also OS reinstall, it did not help, still same error with the dashboard.
It states:
Error reporter
Communication error.
After some reading online I think what has happened is that VPD of the system has been wiped, considering how many recovery tries I performed and some even mid-process restarts I did.
I have ssh access to the NAS and I tried to access the VPD but to no success.
dmidecode shows alot of information missing and it says "to be filled by o.e.m"
I have started the unit in debugmode and I have the number that it shows.
Previous posts have shown that netgear support have been able to help people in similar situation as me.
Is there anyone that can help me to fix this please, would really appreciate some help :)

Yes, that is why we don't recommend doing USB Boot Recovery unless we determine that it is necessary. Often USB Boot Recovery is done when it is not needed.
USB Boot Recovery is only useful if the firmware on the internal flash is corrupt. If the NAS can boot into debug mode (either with/without the disks installed) then USB Boot Recovery is not needed.

mdgm is awsome!
Helped me 2am in the night, remote logged in and restored my unit :)
Thank you so much.
Will be much more careful in the future.
