OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

- sventunusAspirantThanks AMRivlin!! Nice to see that OS6 is based on wheezy, what a relief from etch on 4.2.x from a dev's point of view! :-)
I'm updating my Ultra 6 somewhere in the near future. Outlook says I'll be having some time to spare starting next week, fingers crossed it'll remain that way. Really looking forward to enjoying a fresh web UI & especially more ease at hand building softs for the RN! Etch has caused me some serious headaches... To infinity & beyond! :-) - neoneroAspirantI thank you' all for your answers.
The command for the fan speed is :
echo 80 > /sys/devices/platform/it87.2576/pwm1
But my Radynas Ultra 2 seems noisier than it was before.
The new R6 interface is faster and nicer.
I don't understand why they didn't implement a file manager (like in Synology) to perform copy and paste files between folders created in /data.
In the shares menu we can only delete and download the files ?. - tiranorAspirantI guess ajaxplorer will still be the way to go...

I was a bit surprised that they are using the 3.0 kernel. Maybe OS6 has been under development for too long,
or that Marvell only has a patch set to the 3.0 kernel. Has anyone done any analysis for the source yet?
It seems to me that OS6 is a hodgepodge of squeeze, wheezy, sid and experimental!?!?! (KUDOS for SAMBA 4.0.3, I _really_ want that)
Earlier it was easy to see Netgear patches, but this time I cannot see if there are any Netgear patches at all...
Even tough it reports wheezy, it seems to me like Netgear is pulling packages from where it makes sence.
For instance wheezy will ship with 3.2 kernel, with some extra features, and some backported fixes from later mainline kernel.
Netgear might have done the same with their kernel. 3.0.70 does not exist in the debian tree AFAIK, and is very fresh.
They are also shipping SAMBA 4.0.3 from experimental to my knowledge.
I've looked at the source and there was quite a progress, even within the OS6 minor versions development.
The inital 6.0.0 shipped with 2.6 kernel for some odd reason. I suspect ARM patches...
I spoke to an admin in a debian rich environment during the weekend, and he would not touch btrfs until 3.5 kernel.
Again, strange decision on Netgear part. btrfs is definetly the future, but why not ship a more mature version.
(disclaimer: Netgear might have backported a lot of btrfs fixes, (they do for RAIDiator) but that seems like a strenious task to me.
Or there might have been some backports to the mainline 3.0.x tree that I do not know of...) - demetrisAspirantHello for the Fan problem on Utra 6 you might find useful this:
http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-main-amd64/lm-sensors_3.3.2-2_amd64.deb.html
And you may need these:
http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-main-amd64/libc6_2.13-38_amd64.deb.html
http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-main-i386/lsb-base_4.1+Debian8_all.deb.html
http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-main-amd64/perl_5.14.2-20_amd64.deb.html
http://pkgs.org/debian-wheezy/debian-main-amd64/sed_4.2.1-10_amd64.deb.html
sudo apt-get purge lm-sensors
dpkg -i *.deb
etc
then
#yes "" | sensors-detect - AMRivlinApprentice@Demetris
would that also work on Pro6? - demetrisAspirant@all wearing the new os
- demetrisAspirantNow for LCD controlling you need an LCD display driver :D
So enjoy:
sudo apt-get install lcdproc
http://lcdproc.org/
http://sourceforge.net/projects/lcdproc/files/lcdproc/0.5.6/
Better than Netgear if you ask me!
http://lcdproc.org/screenshots.php3
Dont know if it sticks though after a firmware update to example V6.0.5. - demetrisAspirantOk i got you covered :)
I have contacted TheHijacker for porting his app installer on our unsupported machines.
Way better than readynas app center! 10/10 if you ask me!

They are shipping a mature version. Oracle's Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel uses the 3.0.x kernel. Using the same btrfs source they have good btrfs support on kernel 3.0.x and it's a longterm kernel so NetGear has easily been able to add the latest patches to the 3.0.x kernel.
