OS6 now works on x86 Legacy WARNING: NO NTGR SUPPORT!
Update: It is now unofficially possible using NTGR images to update legacy hardware to os6.X
See Post #3, for directions to install 6.2.1 on x86 Ultra and Pro Models. (ARM NOT SUPPORTED by this OS)
Be forewarned, this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and likely voids any warranty support from NTGR
Supported so far: pro 2/4/6, ultra 2/4/6, old pro / Pioneer Pro, 2100v2
Not Supported: NVX and 2100v1
Thanks go out to "HomeBrew Anonymous" for making this possible.
Update 2: A firmware image to downgrade back to 4.2.26 is now available. See this thread. While this downgrade should get you a working system again on the supported firmware, be forewarned this requires a SYSTEM WIPE and NetGear also does not provide support for this downgrade. If you have issues seek help on these forums.
Original Post/Gripes
I have been reading these forums since Monday's announcement and there has been a resounding "ooof" regarding the fact the Ultras and Pros are unsupported for future OS improvements.
To clear the air: it would appear Netgear will never support os6 on past hardware. I have almost come to grips with this, and at least they have been open and honest with their forward direction and aren't stringing us along. viewtopic.php?f=138&t=70131
The upside is our devices still work and are mostly stable and eventually we can upgrade to a new shell that has os6 support, but in the meantime our $500-1000 investment is unable to take advantage of modern features we all desire.
I don't think I can add a poll here at RN forums, but I would like to garner support for a 100% unsupported home brew of the os6 on Pro6 units.
If we get enough support perhaps a talented member(s) here would help release a homebrew of sorts.
The 3 main caveats are:
1. Netgear will never be held responsible/your warranty is void
2. A format is required (new FS and OS)
3. Data loss is highly possible
If you are still interested please post a reply to this thread.
mdgm and I have decided that its time to lock this thread. So please do post any new OS6 on Legacy issues on their own threads.

Given all the success reports from end users trying out OS6 on older hardware why isn't Netgear moving to support this as an official upgrade (on appropriately compatible hardware - Pro 6 etc)?

Bean-counters? - audiokaasAspirantI went back to 4.23
On OS6 I liked
AD support and teaming
I did not like:
No WOL support.
APC UPS using the APC management card does not work beyond the first time ( you have to reacquaint the the UPS after every reboot)
Slow write speed on the ultra 4 with xraid2 and 4 3Tb Hitachi deskstars was 40Mb with OS6 and 70Mb with OS4.
Unable to keep it from calling home.
For my needs (currently an automated backup) it did not work out, maybe later. - glemAspirantIn a previous post, I described how to fix fan and temperature issues on legacy x86 systems running OS 6.0, until built-in support is there. I think it will be easier for community to have fancontrol file examples for all models in a dedicated topic.
So I'd created today a new topic to share /etc/fancontrol files http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=71155&p=395317#p395317
>> Please, post your /etc/fancontrol file << - arnomcAspirantFor whom was wondering if OS6 can replace all features/functionality they were using on readynas x86 on 4.2.x ; have a look on the review of readyNAS 104 by SmallNetBuilder (They will review the OS6 in more details soon) :
http://www.smallnetbuilder.com/nas/nas- ... ed?start=1Updated 5/23/2013
NETGEAR asked me to point out that setup isn't the only cloud-enabled feature that OS 6 brings to ReadyNAS. You get portal-based (no fiddling with dynamic DNS or router port forwarding) file access and management, a Dropbox-like service (ReadyDROP), Remote support for Time Machine backups, remote play for media files and other features that will be explored in the OS 6 review to follow.
I am definitively waiting for their review as the official Netgear communication is too simple or too marketing for my taste.
PS: sorry glem, when WD to release new Red 4TB, i'll be able to post /etc/fancontrol of my Ultra2. What I can say now is that the fans (in 4.2.x) were most often around 800 rpm for ambiant temperature from 5°C to 25°C (yes 05°C nearly a fridge temp during winter). When temp rised to 38°C the fans went up to 1200rpm range. I am not actively watching at fan speed on the GUI, but sometimes I have seen them too fast considering the temperature (like 1100rpm at 23°C), and a calibration (which wasn't really needed) put the fans back to 800rpm. - chirpaLuminarySeeing how well they QA the firmware releases, I have worries on the security of the 'portal' itself. That gets hacked, ALL ReadyNAS using cloud features are now zombies... Dare you ask for how they maintain those services? And why is ReadyCloud running all the time, even if you have not opted-in, your OS6 NAS has a connection open to readycloud.netgear.com in the background.
UPnP takes care of port forwarding. Dropbox-like service.. I'll take Dropbox itself, it works. Remote Time Machine is something Apple has had long before ReadyNAS, my Time Capsule backup works anywhere I have Internet access, backing up to my home network. Plex does the remote play stuff on other platforms already.
They have lost their sense of direction... - super_poussinVirtuosowill do an addon to disable all this (leaf, genie, remote, replicate, readydrop ....)
- chirpaLuminaryAfter updates I personally do
# apt-get remove leafp2p readydrop rdbroker remote replicate plexmediaserver-ros6 vault rnp2-installer
- wizzardAspirantIt would be grate if some one could create a wikipage where the latest tips were posted. Following a long thread to find answers is not always the best.
update:
I started one just now on http://www.wikihost.org/w/opennetgear/start (use adblock to remove ads) Everyone seam to be able to edit the page if they have the address. So go ahead if you think it is a good idea. - chirpaLuminarywizzard, I would recommend using nas-central.org wiki, it is better maintained and organized.
http://netgear.nas-central.org/wiki/Rea ... tion_guide - sirozhaAspirantI have been a ReadyNAS user since 2005. I'm currently on ReadyNAS Pro Business (6-disk NAS released in 2008). Starting in June of 2012, I started experiencing issues with the NAS becoming unresponsive. Had a couple tickets open with Negtear. The first one was closed without resolution. The second one was open for months and ended up in having my ReadyNAS replaced under RMA. The replacement box has been doing the same exact thing as the original one - becoming unresponsive about every 3 weeks. Services running on the ReadNAS are no longer available. I cannot ping the NAS, and the front button on the NAS (next to the LED screen) stops responding to pushes. A hard reboot fixes the problem until it recurs about 3 weeks later.
I'm using this NAS not only as a file storage and Squeezebox server, but also for my VoIP ESXi lab. The ReadNAS is the iSCSI target for a bunch of VMs. When the NAS becomes unresponsive, iSCSI stops functioning as well. The ESXi reports that the iSCSI target latency becomes too high when this happens.
So, I've completely given up on the ReadyNAS support. By the way, my NAS is still under warranty for a few more months. I've been looking to buy another NAS. Right now, I can't decide between QNAP TS 469 Pro and Synology TS-412+. Both support VAAI for iSCSI, which ReadyNAS does not support (still).
Today, I accidentally ran into this thread and saw that it's possible to install OS6 on the ReadyNAS Pro Business. By the way, how do I know if mine is version 1 or version 2?
The main question is if iSCSI support is solid under OS6 and if it supports VAAI. Before I ditch my ReadyNAS Pro Business, I would want to give it another chance! Also, I really like the build quality and the hardware. It's just too bad that the Jedi have left and Netgear has killed the ReadyNAS line.
Also, has anyone tried to install Synology DSM 4.2 on a ReadyNAS (x86 versions)? It seems that if you guys are porting OS6 to the legacy ReadyNAS, wouldn't it make much more sense to install decent firmware such as Synology? I've read that the DSM has been installed on the QNAP, which supposedly has better hardware than the Synology NASes. I believe everyone still compliments ReadyNAS hardware quality.
