OSX Lion, delays when opening certain docs on NAS
I haven't seen anybody else discussing this, but it's so noticeable to me I find it hard to believe nobody else has noticed it. The setup: Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7....

I don't often work with files directly stored on my NAS so had not noticed this, but I just tried it out - OS X 10.7.2 accessing Ultra-4 running 4.2.19
I can replicate the issue, but there also appears to be a pattern: When opening an image file in a folder that I have not accessed before, there is a pause before the image is visible in Preview as described. However, subsequent images load quickly. Also if the share is unmounted and remounted, the images in those same folders load quickly also.
If I was to guess, I would suggest that the AFP services on the NAS is doing "something" - possibly updating its database - on that first access, possibly caused by the interaction specifically with Lion (which could explain why SL does appear affected)
Would be good to see Netgear investigate this further as I can agree it must be annoying for those working directly with their ReadyNAS data, though it does appear to be a one time issue when accessing data for that first time.
@rcarr6502, @swamp2 - Can you confirm if you see the same?
