OSX Lion, delays when opening certain docs on NAS
I haven't seen anybody else discussing this, but it's so noticeable to me I find it hard to believe nobody else has noticed it. The setup: Mac Pro running OSX 10.6.8 MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7....

The issue of populating icons for photo files when browsing a NAS directory does behave as you describe, slow the first time them no delay the second time. However, after a reboot or some time later any "caching" is no longer present, I get the delay back. The issue is not just browsing of directories though. The actual file access is also a problem. If you want to see how slow, try simultaneously opening a large multiple section of photos with the Apple Preview application. Then try to manually scroll through the pictures say with the down arrow. This is not just slow but truly painful. The spinning CD pointer is the norm... Again I am 95% sure this was nowhere near as slow with older Mac hardware and one older OS step back ( 10.6.8 )
Due to this slow down and the one I have noted above for iTunes, I would not at all be surprised if this is a 100% Apple issue. My new Macbook Air and new OS (Lion, 10.7.2) seem to have a plethora of problems. Of course there is more dialog and more talented trouble shooters here than say Apple forums
Cheers.
