Permission problem with sparsebundle in user share

I've set up TM on my MBP (Mavricks) to back up to my user share on my ReadyNAS Duo v2 following these instructions:
viewtopic.php?f=71&t=59974

It works fine, mostly. But, as others have observed, if there's a connection problem the backup will become "corrupted" and TM will want to start a new backup from scratch, which is annoying.

However, there's this explanation of how to "fix" and "reset" the existing backup on a NAS, and it works:
http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,2 ... rrors.html

Sort of. I run the fix, and it lets me access the old TM backup.

However, it won't use that backup due to a file permission issue. That is, after I fix the old backup, I can go into the TM and see the earlier files, but TM won't use it to continue backing up.

It says the file is read-only.

When, I look at the files in the user directory using Terminal, I see the sparsebundle, and ls -l tells me it has the following permissions:
drwx------ 1 MBPusername staff 16384 date mbpname.sparsebundle

I've done some reading on various pages about chmod or chown commands, but I'm not sure:
a) what the correct permissions are to get this working again, and
b) how to set them recursively to include the files inside the sparsebundle.

Thoughts?

  • Thanks. I'll look into 5.3.10. Do you know if the update fixed the timeout/connection errors that makes it necessary to 'repair' the backup? (If so, I'd be happy to update and start a new TM backup. But if I'm going to have to re-start every month, then I should probably figure out how to fix this).

    I followed these instructions to backup to a user share (not one that's manually created). viewtopic.php?f=71&t=59974
    The instructions are written assuming Frontview, but I either modified and/or found instructions deeper in the thread about how to do it on an ARM NAS.

    I'm running Mavricks.

    The output from the cat cmd is:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>CFBundleInfoDictionaryVersion</key>
    <string>6.0</string>
    <key>band-size</key>
    <integer>8388608</integer>
    <key>bundle-backingstore-version</key>
    <integer>1</integer>
    <key>diskimage-bundle-type</key>
    <string>com.apple.diskimage.sparsebundle</string>
    <key>size</key>
    <integer>3918161387520</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>

    *note* I modified a different file inside the sparsebundle following the instructions here: http://www.garth.org/archives/2011,08,2 ... rrors.html
    {I put all this info in my original post -- not trying to be snarky, just don't want you to think I hadn't said as much. :D}

    The second command (du) generates this:
    173G /c/home/username/macbookpro.sparsebundle
    173G total

    Any other hints? If you tell me the update likely fixed my issue, I'll try it. And wait. And, if I get this problem again come back with a follow-up in a few weeks.

    What's your volume capacity and how much free space do you have?
  • TM says 1.63 TB of 3.92 available.

    Through the RAIDiator, it says 1.5TB of 3.6TB on the system homepage.

    I guess you could try 5.3.10 and if the issue comes back hopefully it will be easier to debug.
  • Well, I updated/upgraded to 5.2.10. As before, TM worked for several weeks and then gave me an error. So, I'm back at the beginning, needing to either a) recover the existing backup and figure out this permission issue so I can keep using the same file or b) start a new backup ever 3 weeks or so, which sort of defeats at least some of the TM purpose.
