Planning for DR on XenServer

I have several ReadyNas Units - RN 104 and ReadyNas 314 units. I would like to know if I buy a couple backup units just to have in inventory and I have a unit die, can I just move the drives from one unit to another and boot up the new unit or do I need to do something else to restore a unit? I am trying to plan for disaster recovery and would like to know the best way to handle if I have a unit die. Thanks.

  • That is okay I believe, when migrating the drives you need to make sure that the drives are on the same slot. If the chassis and the drives does not have the same FW upon migration, the chassis will force firmware update the drives so might as well insert a blank disk and initiate a factory default. Once the FW are the same, you can then migrate the drives.

  • So can I simply throw some drives in the backup unit to update it and then shut it down and remove the drives? In the event I ever need it, I can move the drives from the failed unit to the backup unit and boot it up?

Probably better to keep the backup unit running, and keep the disk contents current with frontview backup.

Then if the drives fail you have a backup.
