I contacted Netgear support who ran through settings and couldn't seem to duplicate the problem. Even with the same settings they said they couldn't replicate the problem. It is obvious that there is a problem with the firmware somewhere as many people are reporting the same problems.
In the end I returned the device and swapped it for a D-Link Nas drive. On the same operating system (So same set up) on the Desktop and Laptop the D-Link worked straight away flawlessly.
