Portforwarding on ReadyNAS Duo

Now, here is an easy/stupid question (hopefully). How do I set up port forwarding on a ReadyNAS Duo, for ReadyNAS Remote? I have searched the forums and everywhere and have followed this guide

http://www.readynas.com/download/documentation/support/ReadyNAS_Remote_Advanced_Setup_Guide.pdf
To setup port forwarding on your ReadyNAS, you will first need to pick a port in
your router that will be used to access your ReadyNAS and point it to the private
IP address of your ReadyNAS. Once this port has been assigned, you can you
can check the box “Specify Port for Incoming Connections” and enter the value
you set in your router.

but the option 'Specify Port for Incoming Connections' is nowhere to be found in Frontview for our ReadyNAS Duo 2110. As far as I understood that's where it should be, right? And everyone else on the forum seems to refer to this option like it's the most natural thing in the world :) Where exactly should I click to find it?

Some background:
I set up the NAS a couple of months ago, activated ReadyNAS Remote, and everything worked perfectly fine. Until yesterday, when suddenly it was connecting via a relay (no configuration changes on the computer/network I connect from), and the connection was really slow. After some reading, I figured the solution seemed to be port forwarding and that seemed to be pretty straight forward to set up, but I just can't find the option above anywhere in the admin interface. I am not desperate to use port forwarding, I just want it to not connect via a relay connection when connecting remotely. I have set up the port forwarding in the router (also Netgear), but how do I specify the port on the ReadyNAS? (I am starting to suspect that it's actually not necessary. It's just the traffic that should be routed to the device... I am sure you have figured out that I am not a networking wizard by now, so this forum is immensely helpful.) When connecting with ReadyNAS Remote from within the network (I have no possibility trying from outside at the moment) it still uses a relay connection (at least that's what the message says).

Is it safe to stop and start the ReadyNAS Remote service/add-on in Frontview, without losing all settings? Will anything else (for example the FTP service) be affected?

  • Lo and behold. Half an hour later, when connecting from inside the network, I don't get the message about a relayed connection anymore, so it looks promising. Will try from outside later today/tonight. Makes me feel even more stupid, but happy...

I am still curious about what happened, though, if anyone has any idea. Is there usually a delay before router settings like these take effect? And why was it suddenly connecting via a relay server, when nothing in the configuration had changed?
  • Works from outside as well, and transfer speeds are up again, so port forwarding seems to have solved the issue. Also forgot to mention earlier that after some relayed connections, I was unable to connect remotely at all. For any other newbie out there that finds this post, I'll write it a bit clearer than the instructions that I could find.

You are using a relayed connection to the following ReadyNAS device: <device name>
If you are getting a relayed connection when connecting through ReadyNAS Remote, setting up port forwarding in the router that the NAS is connected to might solve the problem. Neither the remote client that you are connecting from nor the NAS itself need to be configured in any way. Do the following:

    1. Log in to the router and find the option for port forwarding.
    2. Choose a single port for a TCP service and give it a name (e.g. ReadyNAS Remote).
    3. Specify the IP address of the NAS. This can be found on the Home page in Frontview, if it is not already listed as a connected device somewhere in the router interface.
    4. Click OK/Save/Apply or whatever it's called in your router interface.
  • I am glad you were able to figure your issue out. Thank you for sharing your experience! Keep in mind next time you have an issue Netgear offers free email support for their customers.
  • Thanks, that's good, I actually didn't know that.
