Problem: Readynas 312 back-up to external HDD (Mac)
I'm sorry there is no short version for what I need to ask you, so here we go:
I am a Mac-user. I have a ReadyNas 312 with 2*2 TB in Raid 1. About 450 GB in use. Firmware installed is 6.1.8 - and that is where the trouble starts.
I keep getting prompts to update to 6.2.2, but that won't download. After some investigation, I learned that I need to go back to the factory settings in order to get the update to work.
But before I do, I want to backup what's on the NAS to external hard drives.
I have tried to backup to a 1 TB WD Elements HDD USB 3.0. I used the backup function on de NAS to copy the volume ‘data’ to the WD Elements drive attached to the USB 3-port. But instead of the 450 GB data that's on the NAS, it filled all of the the 700 GB of available space on the WD Elements , and the back-up never got completed.
Could it be the formatting of the external HDD? I have tried every format available to me (remember, I'm on a Mac). I have even formatted the HDD through my old ReadyNas Duo, which still features the option to format in EXT3. But, sadly, to no avail.
In short (a short version after all): I'm stuck. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Robert

- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou shouldn't need to do a factory reset to upgrade to 6.2.2. Some users are having issues with 6.2.2 (I am not myself, but several posters are). So I wouldn't rush to install it. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a 6.2.3 in January...
But you should be able to back up the NAS anyway (as RAID doesn't guarantee your data is safe).
Your problem is that snapshots are being saved to the external drive. They take little space on the btrfs disk volume, but when copied to the external drive every snapshot has the same size as the main folder did when the snapshot was taken. This is not related to the format of the external drive.
One work around is to adjust the settings so that snapshots aren't accessible [they are still there, but only seen by administrators], and back up share by share.
There is a somewhat more complicated work around - which is to use rsync for backup, and exclude the snapshot directories.
You could also delete all your snapshots manually and temporarily disable them. That will work once, but it is better if you have a regular backup schedule for the NAS. - _Ober_AspirantMany thanks for clarifying, Stephen. I'll have to let it sink in a bit, but I think I'll just sit it out untill 6.2.3. And maybe rethink my backup scheme, based on your insights.
Thanks again,
Robert - diablienAspirantSo how does one find these snapshots and delete or omit them from back up? I thought I had a handle on this and scheduled a back up of about 1.4 TB of data to a 2TB USB harddrive then woke up this morning to find the disk had run out of space!
I must've been copying the snapshots along with my data and the backup failed. It seems like this should be so simple. Just "copy all the shares to USB drive" and done. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserGo into the shares page, and it shows you the snapshot count for each share.
Click on a share, and select recover. That will bring up a new page, with tabs for 2014 and 2015 at the top. Each has a count of snapshots. There will also be a list of directories with dates camera icons for snapshot).
You can right-click them and you'll see the delete control.
(btw if you hold ctrl you can select more than one).
