Regarding not wanting to backup your data: would you be happy of it was all lost, is it easily replaceable?
If you can access the data, then I would first do a backup.
If you are happy to risk data loss, or the data is replaceable easily, then you could try:
Power down and do an OS reinstall using the boot menu:

An OS reinstall does not wipe the disks, password and network settings will be reset though. It's pretty safe.
Don't do a factory default.
