Did you see the response from NETGEAR support to your case?
You should backup your data regularly regardless. Multiple disk failures, fire, flood, theft etc. can happen.
Important data should be stored on multiple devices.
What do you want software that reads EXT for? Have you already formatted your USB disks with EXT3/4 and don't want to reformat them? The internal disks in the NAS use BTRFS for the data volume.
If your PC has a gigabit ethernet port you could use a direct-connection to the NAS to backup the data faster.
