Fast ethernet is a wash, so there is little speed advantage to switching. USB 3.0 backup speed to NTFS was measured at ~12 MB/s by smallnetbuilder.com. Fast ethernet can run nearly that fast.

The net here is that you are losing more time here than you will gain by trying to speed things up. You've already lost 2 days.
I think you should hook things back up the way they were before, and just make the backup the way you did before.
