Problems after expansion
I have an Ultra 4, which had until recently 3 x 2TB WD EARS in an X-Raid setup. I got a brand new 2TB EARX which i put in, and the has started the expansion. But it didn't expand the volume, only the ...

That is correct it does not need to be the same manufacturer or even drive size. Keeping a good backup is always a good idea, but especially where you have had issues already. You may have issue resyncing new drives because of the incompatible ones, however trying shouldn't hurt anything.
